The benefits of bark tanning a fur mean that you can render it into an extremely water resistant or water proof textile. If looked after, it can last for many, many decades. This video course has commentary from me, close ups of the skin to give context, demonstrations of all steps mentioned & more.
This course covers:
Skinning. The basics of skinning so that you can get a really nice, even skin.
Preserving the skin salting, drying or freezing.
fleshing, how to remove all flesh & fat from the skin.
washing.
pickling, how to make it, how to check pH & maintain the pH, why to pickle.
bark liquor, bark liquor management, barks you can use, how to prepare it & tanning the skin.
skudding, removing membrane from the skin easily.
Drying the skin to preserve it until ready for the softening stage.
Dressing with fats. What fats you can use, why to use certain fats over others etc.
Softening. Different techniques I use to get really high quality plush skins.
Sanding. How to sand the skin in a way where you get a very professional looking end product.
